Ronia Adl-Tabatabai – Liaison

Emde Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Ronia Adl-Tabatabai. Under the title "Liaison", the artist presents new works in which her long-standing exploration of painting organically expands into three-dimensional space for the first time.
The exhibition title "Liaison" – a connection between two components – simultaneously describes the exhibition’s central principle: different materials, techniques, and forms are brought together. Painting, printmaking, and, for the first time, ceramics intertwine to form a multifaceted network in which materials, colours, and gestures mutually influence one another. Clay pigments find their way into the paintings, lending them a corporeal quality; brushstrokes condense into tactile knots and loops; layers of paint overlap until they can hardly be separated from one another.

For many years, Ronia Adl-Tabatabai has explored the brushstroke – that expressive gesture which, to this day, remains closely associated with the myth of artistic genius. While her earlier works primarily examined the individual brushstroke as a carrier of silent power structures within painting, the focus of her new works increasingly shifts towards connections and the possibilities of making them visible and tangible. Individual brushstrokes overlap and intertwine to form a complex structure of lines, knots, and loops. The new paintings emerge through a prolonged process of applying and removing paint. Layer by layer, the surfaces condense into complex pictorial spaces whose genesis can scarcely be retraced. Delicate shades of pink and blue, translucent layers, and broad, soft brushstrokes endow the works with a strong corporeal presence.
The new ceramic works also embrace this idea of connection. Their point of departure is found in collected plants and branches, whose organic interconnections the artist translates into clay. As in her paintings, the focus here is on processes of growth, connecting, and interweaving. Liaison thus presents an artistic position that consistently develops the possibilities of painting while simultaneously expanding them into three-dimensional space.
Ronia Adl-Tabatabai (*1991) lives and works in Mainz. She studied Fine Arts at Kunsthochschule Mainz and completed her Meisterschülerin studies under Prof. Anne Berning in 2024. Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, most recently as part of the Rheinland-Pfalz Triennale in Trier and at AKM Koblenz. She is currently nominated for the Mainz Art Prize 2026, with works on view in the nominees' exhibition at Apollo (Ollohof), Mainz.
