"Landscape is sound.

When I paint, I enter the pictorial space, i.e. the unfolding landscape. Before painting, I have a kind of condensation of my idea (of landscape) in my head.
I can't imagine a picture in all its ramifications in advance. The shapes and colours emerge when the painting process reaches a certain flow. This is surprising, playful and creates an energetic joy.

Painting leads to forgetting oneself and an alert intuition. Both states that I too often lack in everyday life. You feel somehow primally creaturely, the way you should actually be, I think.

Another thing I love about painting is that there is no need to speak. It activates a different capacity for reflection, one that is quicker and lies ahead of language.
Painting is often like dancing for me: Action, reaction. Movement, pausing. And action again. The progression of the picture determines the rhythm.

That's why I listen to music while I paint. Music and painting converse, I become the medium. Whenever I see the painting later, I think of the atmosphere that the studio has taken on with the sound of the music, the sounds of brushes and cloths, the sound of my footsteps in front of the painting wall.
In my memory, the painting has become connected with the atmosphere and its music.

The titles of the paintings are important to me. Sometimes they are an archive of the pieces of music I have heard. But only if they are not too familiar. I use them to lay out a trail. You can follow it to understand the sonic quality of the picture, but that's not a must.
The titles are also independent sound images for me. As an equivalent to the picture, and because they don't explain or describe anything that could subsequently be recognised in the picture. That's why I sometimes invent onomatopoeic words as titles.

This is a point that has been very important to me for some time now. The pictures are not narrative, there is no action in them. I don't want my pictures to be directly emotional or psychologically readable. They are a painterly presence.

It is of course a decision to paint landscapes. On the one hand, the landscape as a subject is the lowest common denominator between me as a painter and the viewer, just before the picture slips into the abstract.
On the other hand - and this is even more important for me - it offers me the opportunity and space to express what the experienced landscape triggers in me in terms of sensations and overwhelming feelings: dynamism, freedom, sovereignty, balance, beauty, stillness. In this respect, they are emotional after all.

I find two statements by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner apt in this context: 'It is important to realise that art creates, not depicts. That is a big difference. Creating is a free intellectual activity. But there is only one art, and it comes from the experience of nature.'"
